As the police ransack the chamber of vice,

The mill of war casts down the dew and grass.

As the bloodied sea cooks its shores,

The scales of faces roast wallowing.

As the one who was third united two,

He raised the one he had erased, and the erased one rose.

As wedding henna whitened, there appeared the one who chose

Apart from color and both faces, a dyed panel.

Did the one who tickled dreams splinter his eyes

And become dreams calling to the tickler?

On earth, now a place for devils' incitement.

So neither here is the singing shepherd, nor there

A bleat-barker confiding in fragrance and birds.

The age of gas grows old, tongue-tied, yet claims

That its tender youth is still lisping.

It fashions an Iliad from dots—rather,

Letters—to face the 'Damighat' with brains.

Why does longing's end contradict its beginning?

Because he sought what, to him, ought not to be.

An ocean's ashen gray, dried by its long excess.

And pelts the informer with the trunk of the babbler.

There is an echo of two voices, without a dialect.

Has every parrot raved without prompting?

Has the split echo become a cracked voice?

Into the throat of the one who inspires, he slips the one addressed.

So what place is unfit to be a slaughterhouse?

And every place may have become a tannery?

Because the soil has buried innocences, no grass

Gives off fragrance; no neigh cries out, nor a camel's bellow.

They ask: will they find any justification for this?

How long, how long, O blaze, has the echo whinnied?

Where to, O river of shards, has it gurgled?

Because my father's inner recesses are made of ruins,

So who, from what he had, gave you this and bestowed it lavishly?

And that the one I evaded was more evasive?

And this in which I lapped—did I imagine that I

Would see it lap more deeply than I, down to the bottom?

There is an echo, other than the one that split, belonging

To a language that erases histories and languages.
