إن يدع العلم فلا فرية

إن يدع العلم فلا فرية

فالصدق كل الصدق فيما ادعى

فالصدق كل الصدق فيما ادعى

If he claims knowledge, there is no falsehood;

If he claims knowledge, there is no doubt,

for what he claims is truth—the whole truth.

Truth is all truth in what he claimed,

لكن سر العلم في نفسه

كالعسل الصافي خبيث الوعا

كالعسل الصافي خبيث الوعا

But the secret of knowledge within him

But the secret of knowledge is within himself,

is like pure honey in a foul vessel.

Like pure honey, malicious in its container,

يقول: شيطان وشيطانة

يقول: شيطان وشيطانة

دعت فلبى أوهفت إذ دعا

دعت فلبى أوهفت إذ دعا

He says: “A devil and a she-devil—

He says: a demon and a demoness

she called and he answered, or she hastened when he called.”

called me and I responded when they called,

ولم يقل: إلف ومألوفة

تجمعا… سبحان من جمعا

And he did not say: “A lover and a beloved

And he did not say: a familiar and accustomed one

came together—glory be to Him who brought them together!”

gathered... Glory to Him who gathered them,

لأنني استحليت أمسية

لأنني استحليت أمسية

يردني عن درسه موجعا

يردني عن درسه موجعا

Because I savored an evening,

Because I made the evening lawful

he turns me away from his lesson, hurting me.

that sends me away from his lesson painfully,

إن كنت ألقى نادراً حلوة

إن كنت ألقى نادراً حلوة

فهو يلاقي دائماً أربعا

فهو يلاقي دائماً أربعا

If I meet a sweet woman only rarely,

If I rarely find sweetness

he, for his part, always meets four.

he constantly finds four,

أريد أنساً مثله, أشتهي

أريد أنساً مثله, أشتهي

كالناس أن أروى وأن أشبعا

كالناس أن أروى وأن أشبعا

I want companionship as he does; I long,

I want intimacy like his, I desire

like everyone, to slake my thirst and be sated.

like people to quench and satiate,

يا سيدي المفضال: قالوا: ترى

تعليم مثلي قط لن ينفعا

O my generous master, they said you think

teaching someone like me will never be of use.

يا (لطفُ) مهما لمتني لم أدع

هذا السلوك الشائن الممتعا

O Lutf, however much you reproach me, I will not abandon

O Latif no matter how you blamed me I did not leave

this shameful, pleasurable conduct.

this despicable, enjoyable conduct,

ولتمنع التعليم عني كما

ولتمنع التعليم عني كما

تهوى, فخير منك لن يمنعا

تهوى, فخير منك لن يمنعا

And withhold instruction from me as

And forbid education from me as

you wish, for someone better than you will not withhold it.

أبصرتني من بيتها خارجاً

كالكلب, أمشي واجفاً مسرعا؟
