Threaten us with shackles or with weapons.

And bellow with roars or with barks.

And devour our hunger, and march over our torn

    remains, blood-red, like unbridled horses.

And beat the drums above us, and cover

your disgrace with pretense that lays it bare.

Threaten us: the advance will not falter until

    dawn advances from every quarter.

I swear: we shall not return until we are seen

by the banner of victory in the radiant day.

Frighten us with death: we have made light

of our lives in the noble struggle.

We have grown used to death, as forests grow used

to autumn's ravaging of great trees.

And we have scorned beheadings, and grown addicted

to death in the slaughterer's tavern.

So dig graves along our path, for we

shall go on, to burial or to success.

We are a people who have baffled death's imagination

and defied the hand of all-erasing time.

    Whenever tyrants bloodied a wing

of this people, it bloodied their throats with a wing.

It wearied prison and shackles, but did not weary,

and its jailer dozed while it stayed awake.

Wakeful as the stars, it brings dawn to birth

and beckons to it with wounds.

You who toy with the people, lengthen

our night, and fill it with phantoms.

Mine our path, and prolong our darkness,

and extinguish the shooting stars and the anticipation of morning.

We shall walk upon the wounds until

we kindle dawn from the blaze of wounds.

So shed our blood at will; rose-red will grow

the cheek of morning with blood shed at will.

Honors sprout only in a land

whose soil the bones of sacrificial victims have fertilized.

And the martyr's blood is the freshest laurel

    on heroism's gleaming brow.

And our wounds upon the horizon are the loveliest

gleaming twilight, and the most splendid sash.

We answered the voice of noble virtues when

the defiant, licentious tyrant ran riot,

and built the palace from the ribs of

millions, and the hunger of the wage-earner and the peasant.

So we tore from his breast the heart of

Samson, and from his face the mask of Sajah.

We marched toward him over blood,

and over fire, spears, and sword-blades.

And we charged at death as though

we longed for doom in every field.

    دمنا الزيت في فم المصباح

    No wind made our lamp sway;

our blood is the oil in the lamp's mouth.

We are a people who waded toward dawn through a horror

gaping in the road like a crocodile.

And we crossed a night like the tongues of snakes,

while the road raged with mutual recrimination.

And our blood spread through the hills—

the brown hills—like perfume where the winds blow.

Between us and the goal lies one stride of resolve,

leaping like bright morning, youthful in its aspiration.

I swear: we did not stop marching until

we braided laurel onto the brow of struggle.
