1. هنا، أرقمُ الصدى

    وأنمحي كالخَربشةْ

    Here, I inscribe the echo,

    And I am erased like a scribble;

  2. وكالصلاةِ ارتقي

    وأرتمي كالدَّروشةْ

    And, like prayer, I ascend,

    And I fling myself down as in dervish ecstasy;

  3. أهمي ندى وأرتخي

    كالتُّربةِ المُرشَّتّةْ

    I fall as dew and grow slack,

    Like the sprinkled soil.

  4. سحابةٌ تزرعُني

    تفاحةً ومِشمشةْ

    A cloud plants me

    As an apple and an apricot,

  5. نعشاً تجرهُ الحَصى

    إلى الوعود المنعشةْ

    A coffin dragged by the pebbles

    To the refreshing promises.

  6. مقبرةٌ تُلبسني

    عباءةً مزركشةْ

    A cemetery dresses me

    In an embroidered cloak,

  7. عمامةً زيديةً

    ولحيةً منتفشهْ

    A Zaidi turban,

    And a bristling beard.

  8. عشيةٌ تمدني

    للريحِ بيداً موحشةْ

    An evening stretches me out

    For the wind, as desolate deserts,

  9. جنازةً هنديةً

    حمامةً معششةْ

    An Indian funeral,

    A nesting dove.

  10. عصفورةٌ تحملني

    صفيحةً منقّشةْ

    A sparrow carries me

    As an engraved metal sheet,

  11. جزيرةً، شواطئاً

    سفينة مرقّشةْ

    An island, shores,

    A mottled ship.

  12. حقيبةٌ تطبخُني

    قضيةً مشوشةْ

    A suitcase cooks me

    Into a muddled case,

  13. أمسيةً كهفيةً

    صبيحةً مغبشةْ

    A cave-like evening,

    A hazy morning,

  14. بيتاً، كتاباً، شارعاً

    مقهىّ، حكايا مُدهشةْ

    A house, a book, a street,

    A café, astonishing tales.

  15. ألوهةٌ تعزفُني

    وعداً غريبَ الوشوشةْ

    A divinity plays me

    As a promise with a strange whisper,

  16. دقائقاً ورديةً

    مواقِفاً مُرتعِشةْ

    Rosy minutes,

    Trembling stances.
