أَبىrefused اللَيلُthe night بالمَرّانِat al-Marrān أَنto يَتَصَرَّماcome to an end
كَأَنّيas though I أَسومُdemand of العَينَthe eye نَوماsleep مُحَرَّماforbidden
The night at al-Marrān refused to come to an end,
The night refused to part with its darkness
as though I were demanding forbidden sleep of my eye.
As if I was putting kohl on sleepy eyes forbidden
وَرُدَّand was drawn back بثَنيَيهِby its two ends كَأَنَّas though نُجومَهُits stars
صُوارٌa herd of wild cattle تَناهىcame forth and gathered مِنfrom ارانٍa lair فَقَوَّماthen stood still
And it was drawn back by its two ends, as though its stars
Its folds returned as if its stars
were a herd of wild cattle that came out of a lair and stood still.
Were necklaces taken off from smooth skin

To God, not to people, I complain that I
I complain to Allah, not people, that I
suck a dried-up teat among the milk-givers,
Suck the daughters of pearls, an addicted sucker

And a market where women's clothes are robbed
whom they give as slave-gifts to Hamdān and Khathʿam.
Given to the penniless as gifts and rags

On what grounds, O Luʾayy son of Ghālib,
To what end, O Lu'ay, son of Ghalib
do you heed him who drove horses against me and bridled them?
Do you respond to what has befallen me and silenced me

And bring forth, then recite, a verse you read
Recite a verse you read
that made it lawful for my land to be ravaged and wronged.
That made my country halal to conquer and oppress

And if not, may God set a vast distance between me and you,
Else may Allah increase the distance between me and you
and allot abundant dishonor to whoever is more ignoble.
And make succeed the many cowards who were vile

And a band of sucklings from Thaqīf has witnessed us,
You witnessed the suckling between us and Thaqif
and Zamzam’s keepers kept the circling throng away from them.
While the caretaker of Zamzam was absent

The sons of Hāshim—had they met you pursuing it in earnest,
O Banu Hashim, if you meet them
you would have spat blood, and your chest could not have held it in [uncertain reading].
You grieve and cannot restrain your tears

You will learn, if your sandal slips once beneath you—
You will know if a slipper slips
and every man meets what he has sent ahead—
And every man meets what he has forwarded

that you have dallied with a serpent’s fangs,
That you have confronted the fangs of a serpent
that drives on, with its two eyes, a great serpent and a speckled snake.
Who stares with her eyes at the brave and deluded

Behind my back, and had I met him, he would have regretted

Lavish with oaths, until, when I met him,
Many threatened, until when I met him
he persisted in sin, though he had sworn an oath.
He persisted in sin, even if he had sworn

And you, O Banu Ham son of Noah
swollen lips like the projecting ends of camel-litters.
I see you have lips like buttocks of she-camels

So if you say, ‘My maternal uncle is of Quraysh,’ I have not found
If you say you are free of Quraysh, I have not found
among people anyone worse or baser than your father.
Worse people than your father and mother

His nanny let him suck till he grew up and was weaned

he saw a sturdy hide from the stock of Hām,
He saw a tough skin of the people of Ham
and a huge, rounded head the size of a jarīb grain-measure.
And a head like sheep skulls with peeling scabs

And you were castoffs among Thaqīf—keep to your place,
You were outcasts among Thaqif, your status
sons of the slave: your blood does not equal a single man’s blood.
O children of the slave, your blood never avenges blood
