لاnot أَحسِبُI reckon الشَرَّevil جاراًa neighbor لاnot يُفارِقُنيleaves me

وَلاnor أحُزُّI slit عَلىover ماwhat فاتَنيhas passed me by الوَدَجاthe jugular vein
وَلا أحُزُّ عَلى ما فاتَني الوَدَجا
I do not reckon evil a neighbor who never leaves me.
I do not think hardship will persist and not leave me
Nor do I slit my jugular over what has passed me by.
Nor do I grieve over what has passed me by
وَماand never نزلتُI alighted مِنof المَكروهِhardship مَنزِلَةًa place

إِلّا وَثِقتُ بأن أَلقى لَها فَرَجا
And never have I alighted in a place of hardship
And I have never met with misfortune
without trusting that I would find relief from it.
Except I was certain I would find relief from it
لاmay not جَعَلَmake اللَهُGod قَلبيmy heart حينَwhen يَنزِلُdescends بيupon me

هَمٌّa worry تَضيَّفَنيvisited me as a guest ضَيفاًcramped وَلاnor حَرجاconstricted
هَمٌّ تَضيَّفَني ضَيفاً وَلا حَرجا
May God never make my heart, when there descends upon me
May God not let any worry enter my heart
a worry that comes to me as a guest, cramped or constricted.
As an unwelcome guest causing discomfort

مَرَّت عَليَّ ضَروسٌ تَخزِلُ الثَبَجا
Nor am I one whose neck-sinew is stretched out when
Nor make me shed tears of sorrow
a biting calamity passes over me, slashing the upper back.
When adversities pass by that melt dignity
وَلاnor تَرانيyou see me عَلىover ماwhat فاتَhas gone مكتَئِباًdejected

Nor will you see me dejected over what has gone,
You will not see me depressed over what is lost
nor will you see me elated at what is brought my way.
Nor will you see me delighted by what I'm deprived of
