If you do not know what death is, then look
If you do not know what death is, look
at Hani in the marketplace and the son of Aqil;
At Hani in the market and Ibn Aqil

at a hero whose face the sword has shattered,
At the hero whose face the sword has shattered
and another, slain, plunging from a height.
And another who plunges from the slain's mantle

The ruler's command struck them both, and they became
Fate from the prince has struck them
the talk of those who travel by night along every road.
They are tales for those who go down every road

You see a body whose color death has changed,
You see a body whose hue death has changed
and a spattering of blood that has flowed down every channel.
And blood poured that flowed down each brook

وَأَقطَعُ من ذي شَفرَتَين صَقيلِ
A young man who is [more bashful?] than a modest maiden,
A youth who was sacrificial prey from a vivacious girl
and sharper than a polished, double-edged sword.
And severed by the two sharpened blades

Can Asma ride the ambling steeds in safety,
Will Asma ride safe
when Madhhij has sought him in vengeance for blood-debts?
When Madhij has sought him out insistently

عَلى رِقبَةٍ مِن سائِلٍ وَمَسولِ
Murad circles around him, and all of them
Murad's kinsmen circle around
are on the watch, asker and asked alike.
All with necks of questioning and imploring
فانso if أَنتُمyou (plural) لَمdo not تثأرواseek vengeance بِأَخيكُمُfor your brother

So if you do not avenge your brother,
So if you do not avenge your brother
then be remnants appeased with little.
Then be remnants satisfied with little
