حَنَّتmoaned with longing قَلوصيَmy young she-camel وَهناًlate at night بَعدَafter هَدأَتِهاher rest
فَهَيَّجَتso she roused مُغرَماًa lovestruck man صَبّاًardently yearning عَلىto الطَرَبِrapture
My young she-camel moaned late at night after her rest,
My heart ached and softened after being hardened
So she roused a lovestruck, yearning man to rapture.
It aroused intense longing, pouring out passion
حَنَّتshe yearned إِلىfor خيرthe best منof those who حُثَّwere urged onward المَطيُّthe riding camels لَهُtoward him
كالبَدرِlike the full moon بَينَbetween أَبيAbu (father of) سُفيانَSufyan وَالعُتبِand al-'Utb
She yearned for the best man toward whom riding camels were urged,
It yearned for one better than the urged camel does for him
Like the full moon between Abu Sufyan and al-'Utb.
Like the full moon between Abu Sufyan and al-Utaybi
تَذَكَّرَتshe remembered بِقُرىin the villages of البَلقاءِal-Balqa نائِلَهُhis bounty
لَقَدindeed تَذَكَّرتُهI remembered him مِنfrom نازِحfar-off عَزَبِremote
In the villages of al-Balqa she recalled his bounty;
It recalled the settlements of al-Balqaa and its people
Indeed, I remembered him from a distant, remote place.
I remembered it from an emigrant of the nomadic tribe
وَاللَهِby God ماnot كانَwas بيin me لَولاwere it not for زِيارَتُهُvisiting him

By God, were it not for visiting him,
By God, I wouldn't have visited were it not for seeing him
And meeting Abu Hassan, I would have had no desire.
And that I meet Abu Hassaan from the Arabs
حَنَّتshe moaned with longing لِترجعَنيto turn me back خَلفيbehind me فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her
هَذاthis man أَمامِكِbefore you فالقَيهِso meet him فَتىthe youth of العَرَبِthe Arabs
She moaned to turn me back the way I had come, so I said to her:
It ached for me to return behind me, so I said to it
Here he is before you—meet him, the youth of the Arabs.
This is ahead of you, meet the young man of the Arabs

He does not regard evil as a neighbor that never leaves him,
He doesn't consider harm a neighbor, doesn't part with it
Nor does he punish in anger when forbearance is called for.
Nor punish with anger when being forgiving

From the best and noblest family we have known,
From the best house we knew and honored
Their blood used to cure rabies.
Their blood heals those bitten by dogs
