    Why do love’s gallows

Murder the lovesick one and burn him?

    And longing—longing—its hammers

Kill my patience and tear it apart.

And the waves—the waves—send it surging,

And night stretches out and drowns it.

    The current nearly encircled it—

But for the shore that loves it.

    Why do love’s gallows

Murder the heart and burn it?

A night kneels with its whisperings,

And a sky teems with shooting stars.

And the Nile rippled with lights,

It exults in passion and rapture.

It gathered the lovers and encircled them

With necklaces of silver and gold.

    أمواهُ النِّيلِ مِنَ العَجَبَ

    And the full moon’s daughters tinge them;

The waters of the Nile are a marvel.

    Why do love’s gallows

Murder the heart and burn it?

Why does the apparition circle around me

    From one bend to another?

    And night—night—its stars

    Race, love-maddened, across the ceilings.

The hours of life implore them,

And I implore them: “For God’s sake, stop!”
