ماnot عادَany longer يَكفيsuffices أَلفُa thousand مِلْيونٍmillion قُبَلْkisses
Shall I taste honey from your lips, my love?
Shall I taste honey from your lips, my love?
A thousand million kisses no longer suffice.
A million kisses are no longer enough
سأَموتُI shall die مِنof ظَمَإٍthirst إذاif لمnot تَرْحَميyou show mercy
قَلْبًاa heart تَحَطَّمَshattered فيin هَواكِlove for you وماand did not وَصَلْreach
I shall die of thirst if you do not show mercy
I will die of thirst if you do not have mercy
to a heart shattered by love for you, yet never reaching you.
On a heart shattered by passion for you, with no respite
أنتِyou الحَياةُlife، جَمالُهاits beauty وسُرُورُهاand its joy
ولَأَنتِand indeed you فيin عَينيmy eyes الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades والزُّحَلْand Saturn
You are life, its beauty and its joy.
You are life itself, its beauty and joy
And indeed, in my eyes, you are the Pleiades and Saturn.
To me you are the sun and the shining stars
ياO كُلَّall أحلاميmy dreams وسِرَّand the secret سعادتيmy happiness
فيin البحرِthe sea فيin الواديthe valley علىon رأسِthe summit الجَبَلْthe mountain
O all my dreams, and the secret of my happiness,
O all my dreams and the secret of my happiness
in the sea, in the valley, on the mountain's summit.
On the sea, in the valley, atop the mountain
أناI ماnot رَكِبْتُI sailed البَحرَthe sea يومًاever هائِجًاraging
إلّاexcept إليكِtoward you وأنتِand you بَحْريmy sea والرَّمَلْand the sand
I have never sailed the sea in its fury
I have never sailed the raging sea
except toward you—you are my sea and the sand.
Except towards you, for you are my sea and shore
والكاملُand the kāmil meter المَجزوءُshortened يَزهوflourishes عندماwhen
سَخَّرتُهI harnessed it لِهَواكِfor love of you أشرقَit shone واكتَملْand became complete
And the shortened kāmil meter flourishes; when
And poetry flows effortlessly
I harnessed it to love for you, it shone and became complete.
When I write it for your love, radiant and complete
فيin نَظْرَةٍa glance مَجنونةٍmad بِعُجَالةٍin haste
صَوَّبْتِyou aimed سَهمًاan arrow فيinto الفُؤادِthe heart لهfor it قَتَلْit killed
With a mad glance, in haste,
With a crazed, hurried glance
you aimed an arrow into the heart, killing it.
You targeted an arrow into my heart that killed me
فُضِحَwas exposed الهوىlove لمّاwhen سَفَحْتُI poured out مَدامعيmy tears
والدَّمعُand tears يَفْضَحُexpose مَنْwhoever يُحِبُّloves مَدىthroughout الأَزَلْeternity
Love was laid bare when I poured out my tears,
Love was exposed when I shed my tears
and tears expose whoever loves, throughout eternity.
For tears reveal who loves unto eternity
أصبَحْتِyou became فيin حُلُميmy dream الأَنيسَthe companion وفيand in دَميmy blood
جَمْرًاan ember تَوَقَّدَglowed بِالمَحَبَّةِwith love واشتعلْand blazed
You became my companion in my dream, and in my blood,
You’ve become in my dream a companion, and in my blood
an ember that glowed with love and blazed.
Embers that ignited with passion and blazed
قَدَّسْتُI revered فيin خَدَّيْكِyour cheeks مَعبودَthe idol الهوىlove
ورأيتُand I saw كيفhow اللهُGod أبدعَcreated masterfully فيin المُقَلْthe eyes
I revered love's idol in your cheeks,
I sanctified your cheek, worshiped there
and saw how God worked wonders in the eyes.
And saw how God perfected creation
إنّيindeed I ذَبَحْتُI slaughtered الصَّبْرَpatience فِيكِfor you وطالماand how often
حُبٌّlove، تَفَجَّرَburst forth عندماwhen فَقَدَlost الأمَلْhope
Indeed, I slaughtered patience for you—and how often
I have sacrificed patience for your sake
love has burst forth when it lost hope!
Love gushed forth when hope was lost
إنif كانَis حُبُّكِloving you زَلَّةًa misstep وجريمةًand a crime
ياO حَبَّذاhow welcome تلكَthose الجرائمُthe crimes والزَّلَلْand the missteps
If loving you is a misstep and a crime,
If your love is a sin and crime
oh, how welcome those crimes and missteps!
How lovely are those sins and trespasses
إنِّيindeed I أَسِيرُكِyour captive صائِمًاfasting أوor مُفْطِرًاnot fasting
حَدَّثْتُI told أهليmy family والأَواخرَand the last والأُوَلْand the first
Indeed, I am your captive, fasting or not.
I am your captive, fasting or breaking fast
I have told my family, and the last and the first.
I have told my family, elders and youths
ماذاwhat يُقالُis said إذاif سَكِرْتُI grow drunk صَبابةًwith longing
وثَمِلْتُand I become intoxicated؟ ماhow أَحلىsweet الصَّبابةَlonging والثَّمَلْand drunkenness
What will be said if I grow drunk with longing
What can be said if I get drunk on wine
and become intoxicated? How sweet are longing and drunkenness!
How sweet is drunkenness and tipsiness
فَسَليso ask، وقدand already حَدَّثْتُI told عَنْكِabout you دَفاتِرِيmy notebooks
وحُروفَand the letters أقلاميmy pens وجامعةَand the League الدُّوَلْthe States
So ask, for I have told my notebooks about you,
Ask me, I have told my notebooks about you
and the letters of my pens, and the League of States.
And the letters of my pen and the university halls
وأكادُand I am about to أَصْرُخُI shout فيon المنابرِthe pulpits كُلِّهاall of them
باسْمِيin my name واسمكand your name لاnot أَكِلُّI tire ولاnor أَمَلّI grow bored
And I am about to cry out from every pulpit,
I almost scream your name from every pulpit
in my name and yours; I neither tire nor grow bored.
Not ashamed or hesitant to profess and declare
ضاقَتْclosed in بِيَon me العَبَراتُtears عِندَat فِراقِكُمْparting from you
وذَهَبْتُand I began أَخْلِطُI mix بالرِّثاءِwith elegy معwith الغَزَلْlove verse
Tears choked me at parting from you,
Expressions failed me during our separation
and I began mingling elegy with love verse.
And I mingled elegy with love poetry
ورأيتُand I saw أوراقَsheets الحريرِsilk تَغارُgrow jealous مِنof
خَدَّيْكِyour cheeks والعَينانِand the two eyes يَقْتُلُهاkills them الخَجَلْshyness
And I saw sheets of silk grow jealous of
I saw sheets of paper jealous
your cheeks, while both eyes are slain by shyness.
Of your cheek and eyes that shyly lower their gaze
فإذاso if أَذِنْتِyou consent بِضَمَّةٍto an embrace فَكأنَّماthen as though
فَرَّجْتِyou relieved غَمًّاa sorrow لاnot أُطِيقُI can bear لهfor it ثِقَلْweight
So if you consent to an embrace, it is as though
If you allow an embrace, it's as if
you have relieved a sorrow whose weight I cannot bear.
You've relieved an unbearable sorrow
وإذاand if أَبَيْتِyou refuse فقدthen perhaps أَموتُI die، وتَنْدِميand you will regret
أَبَدًاforever، ولكنْand yet ليسَthere is no بعدafter الموتِdeath حَلّْa remedy
And if you refuse, I may die, and you will regret it
And if you refuse, I will die, and you'll regret
forever—and yet after death there is no remedy.
Forever, but there is no solution after death
