    فطَوَى عن غَرامِهِ أَثوابَه

    He returned, as forty closed his door;

    Then he folded away his garments, turning from his passion;

    ووَلَّى عَهْدُ الهَوى والصَّبابَةْ

    And the dreams of thirty's recklessness passed away;

    And the age of love and ardent longing was gone.

    Fear donned his face, and there rose

    within his inner depths a sigh and gloom.

    And he shone in the darkness with his burning tears,

    Fearing God's punishment.

    Oh, how safe I am from recklessness! And how often, in

    reckless passions, he squandered his youth!

    The time has come, has come to return, O heart, and to re-

    turn with a skittish, bounding soul.

    A runaway returned and regained his good sense.

    May God bless his resolve and his return.

    There is nothing for Abd al-Wali in the procession of repen-

    tance but to keep to his prayer niche.
