Indeed, my heart yearned for love and union.

How far from me is that soft-voiced gazelle?

The oryx—may God never torment the oryx!

How often she has made me taste torment and sorrow!

And may God watch over a skittish gazelle,

Whose gaze writes literature and art.

Never did it gaze without its eyelid striking me,

And clothing my eye in sleeplessness and sorrow.

    Sighs kindled by love's anguish—

Oh, what longing, scorching me all night with ordeals!

What is honey worth, and what does wine mean,

Beside sweet saliva, not a jar's tawny wine?

A marvel God fashioned; and what

The Creator has fashioned is beyond price.

How far from me is her gaze? Where am I?

Where are my heart, my dwellings, and my homeland?

Between her eyelids and her cheeks lies my blood.

She is the heart's remedy and repose.
