سَحَرًاbefore dawn هاجَنِيstirred me اللُّجوءُseeking refuge لِبابِكْto Your door
Your torment
Before dawn, I was stirred to seek refuge at Your door,
With tears streaming, afraid of Your torment,
وَجِلًاtrembling مِنْat صَنائعٍdeeds وخطاياand sins
سِرَّهاtheir secret قدalready طَوَيْتَهُYou have concealed it فيwithin حِجابِكْYour veil
Trembling at deeds and sins
Whose secret You have already folded away within Your veil.
وغَداand became الخَوفُfear مَسْرَحيmy roaming ground ومَراحِيand my resting place
مُسْتَبِدًّاholding sway بِجَبْهَتيover my brow عندَat بابِكْYour door
And fear became my roaming ground and resting place,
Holding sway over my brow at Your door.
وتَوَلَّتْنِيand took hold of me الهُمومُcares كلَيْلٍlike a night
Your reproach
And cares took hold of me like a night,
Pitch-dark, kept sleepless by Your reproach.
ضَعُفَتْhas weakened حِيلَتِيmy resourcefulness فأيُّso what اعتذِارٍplea for pardon
ليلةَon the night of القَبْرِthe grave مُؤنِسيmy comforter فيin تُرابِكْYour dust
My resourcefulness has weakened—what plea
Will comfort me on the night of the grave, in Your dust?
ليmine مِنَof الذَّنْبِsin ماwhat عَلِمْتَYou know وإنّيand indeed I
مُسْتَزِيدٌseeking more ولاجِئٌand taking refuge فيin رِحابِكْYour spacious courts
Mine are the sins You know, and I
Seek more and take refuge in Your spacious courts.
أناI رَغْمَdespite الَّذيwhat جَنَيْتُI have committed إلهيmy God
لمnot أزلْI cease ضارِعًاhumbly pleading علىat أَعتابِكْYour thresholds
I, despite the wrong I have done, my God,
Have never ceased pleading humbly at Your thresholds.
فاكسُنِيso clothe me حُلَّةَa robe of الرِّضاapproval قبلَbefore مَوْتيmy death
ولَدَىand at الحَشْرِthe Gathering، البعثَresurrection فيamong أحبابِكْYour beloved ones
So clothe me in the robe of Your approval before my death,
And at the Gathering, raise me among Your beloved.
