لَمْلَمْتُI gathered up أَحزانيmy sorrows وأوجاعِيَهand my pains
وصِرْتُand I became لِلْعَودِfor return هُناhere داعِيَةْan advocate
I gathered up my sorrows and my pains.
And here I became an advocate of return.

جيشَan army رَياحينِfragrant flowers الهُدىguidance ثانِيَةْonce again
And from the fragrance of the east wind's breeze I led
An army of guidance's fragrant flowers once more.

أَسْلَفْتُI gave previously مِنof عُمْرِيmy life وأَشْعارِيَهْand my poems
Enough for youthful dalliance and maidens is what
I have already given of my life and my poems.
كَهْلٌa middle-aged man تَصابَىfeigned youth وَيْحَalas for أَشجانِهhis sorrows
حَتَّامَhow long لاno دُنْياworldly life ولاand no باقِيَةْeverlasting life؟
A middle-aged man feigned youth—alas for his sorrows!
How long—with neither this world nor life everlasting?
