فَمنthen who مُبلغٌwill convey عنِّيon my behalf المحسَّنَal-Muhassan ذاpossessor of النَّدىbounty
وإخوَتَهand his brothers الجارِينَwho follow مَجرَىthe course of المُحسنِthe benefactor
Who, then, will carry my message to al-Muhassan, lord of bounty,
Who will convey on my behalf to the benevolent one of dew,
and his brothers, who follow the benefactor’s path?
And his brothers who act with the benevolence of the benevolent,
أرانيI see myself وإيَّاكُمand you كظَمآنlike a thirsty one خامِسٍseeking water on the fifth day
إلىtoward الماءِthe water تَجريflow تَحتَهbeneath him خَمسfive أعيُنِsprings
I see myself with you as one thirsty on his fifth day,
I see you and me as a fifth thirsty one,
bound for water, while five springs flow beneath him.
To the water beneath which five springs flow,
كذلِكَlikewise أنتُمyou خَمسَةٌfive فاضَoverflowed جُودُكمyour bounty
فعمَّso it encompassed all وبالتَّسويفِand with postponement والمطلِand delay خصَّنيsingled me out
So too, you are five; your bounty has overflowed,
Just so, you are five whose generosity overflows,
reaching everyone, yet singling me out for postponement and delay.
It spread, and my neglect and procrastination singled me out,
وفيand at أيِّwhich وقتٍtime كانَwas ذاthis وقتat the time of ماwhat جَرىhappened
فجارَتand dealt unjustly عَلىwith حاليmy condition نَوائبُthe calamities of أزمُنيmy times
And when was this? When events unfolded,
And at whatever time it was, it was a time of what transpired,
and the calamities of my times dealt harshly with my lot.
So the calamities of my eras flowed over my state,
ألمdid I not أجمَعgather الأسماعَthe ears ثمَّthen تَركتُهاleave them
مَساكِنَdwellings أقوالٍfor words رَهائِنhostages ألسُنِto tongues
Did I not gather ears, then leave them
Did I not gather the hearings, then leave them,
dwellings for words, hostages to tongues?
Abodes of words, hostages of tongues,
فكَمhow often, then خالَفتcontradicted حاليmy condition مَقاليmy speech وإنَّهand indeed it is
ثَناءٌpraise عَليكمof you ليسَis not يُثنَىbent فينثَنيand so bends
How often my plight has belied my speech! Yet it is
So how my condition differed from my words, though it is,
praise of you, unbent and unyielding.
Praise of you, no twisting therein, so do not twist me,
وإنِّيand indeed I عَلىdespite ماwhat كانَcame منِّيfrom me لَمِنكُمُam surely one of you
فياso, O نَفثةَoutburst المَصدُورِof one afflicted in the breast قَدindeed هجتِyou have raged فاسكُنيso be still
And despite what has come from me, I am indeed one of you;
And I, for what was from me toward you,
so, O outburst from a troubled breast, you have raged; now be still.
O breath of my breast, you raged, so be calm.
