كانcame to pass يومُthe day البَينِof parting أوor لمdid not يَكُنِcome to pass
أيَّwhat شيءٍthing بَعدكمafter you يَسلُبُنيtakes from me
Whether the day of parting came or not,
Was it the day of separation, or did it not exist?
what can it take from me after you?
What is there after you that can take away from me?
كَمhow often أقاسِيI endure آيِساًa despairing one يُطمعُنيgives me hope
فيكُمin you أوor خائِفاًa fearful one يؤمِنُنيreassures me
How often I endure a despairing one who gives me hope
How much do I suffer, despairing, giving me hope,
in you, or a fearful one who reassures me.
Or fearful, reassuring me, in you.
لوif نَهَتكُمrestrained you لَوعَةٌa pang of anguish عنfrom لَوعَتيmy anguish
لأَقَمتُمyou would have stayed أوor شَجاكُمgrieved you شَجنيmy sorrow
Had anguish kept you from causing my anguish,
If a grief kept you from my grief,
you would have stayed, or my sorrow would have grieved you.
You would stay or be stirred by my stirring.
وإذاand when كنتُI am مُقيماًstaying خالِياًbereft
منof فؤاديmy heart فَمُقامِيthen my staying ظَعنيmy departure
And when I stay, bereft
And if I stay empty
of my heart, my staying is my departure.
Of my heart, then my staying tortures me.
صاحِبيmy companion منfrom دُونِother than مَنwhoever يَصحَبُنيaccompanies me

My companion, apart from whoever accompanies me,
My companion without whom no one accompanies me,
stop—for how astonishing is what has stopped me:
Stop, how strange is what stopped me,
رسمُa trace قلبٍof a heart هاجَهstirred it رَسمُa trace هَوىًof love
كامِنٌhidden بَينَamong رُسومِthe traces الدِّمَنِof the abandoned campsites
a trace of a heart stirred by a trace of love,
The form of a heart stirred by the form of love,
hidden among the traces of abandoned campsites.
Hidden among the forms of the inkwells.
إنif جَنتhas sinned عينٌan eye فخُذthen exact حدّاًa penalty بهاfor it
أبَداًforever وارحَمand have mercy on سَقامَthe sickness الأَعيُنِof the eyes
If an eye has sinned, exact a penalty for it,
If an eye commits sin, then take it to account,
forever, and have mercy on the sickness of eyes.
Forever, and have mercy on the sickness of eyes.
