Weeping bore witness, yet I brought no witness
To second it—and can a single witness's testimony suffice?

Then I departed; I neither denied my love nor
Proved it before the beloved who denied it.

Why do I see two fires—one hidden upon
My liver, and one outward, gleaming for my sickbed visitor?

فكأنfor it is as though جسميmy body فيin فؤادٍa heart واحِدone
Can there be a single heart within my body?
For it is as though my body were within a single heart.

May no good flow from you, O wronged heart,
Created for calamities and hardships.

You face calamities; no trembling pulse finds rest
Within you, nor do I see any incoming trouble depart.

Do you know? For I do not know
Whether I am among you or in a fire-kindler's pit.

Truly, I envy others their release from love, though
My heart has never envied anything else.

Have you escaped love's agonies so completely
That I see not even one person to help me?

And I parted from a slender beloved; his tears,
When we met for farewell, were my necklaces.

He wept and asked me to stay; I only
Refused him for your sake, O son of Abd al-Wahid,

When I heard that your generosity stood waiting,
Eager, offering itself to the seeker.

How often I called on him in a plight whose relief was beyond reach,
And returned with signs of his bounty and proofs of it!

Abu al-Husayn spread both hands, calling
Throughout humankind and jinn: 'Is there a visitor?'

Then, when the call led them to generosity,
The place itself rose to give it the thanks due a guide.

And I saw the children of Time at his door,
In bands, coming to complain of their father's unkindness.

And it was as though the five fingers in his palm,
On the day of bounty and generosity, were five banquet tables.

He is openhanded, while the miser clutches
This world in his right hand with an immortal's grasp.

فعلامwhy then يجمعُdoes he hoard نافِداًsomething perishable فيwithin نافِدsomething perishable
And wealth runs out, and life does too—both of them;
Why, then, does he hoard what perishes in what perishes?

O judge over the calamities of his age,
Indeed, calamities—my adversaries—have passed judgment.

And my grievance against their oppression is longstanding;
It hides and shows itself in the bodies of my poems.

But I have come to you to lay it bare, confident
That it will find its way into a noble man's ears.

Do not leave me alone with Time, for I am
Helpless in the two fists of one who acts like a lion.

Nothing remains for the hopeful to cling to
Except your goodness in a corrupt age.
