حتىuntil ذكرتُكَI remembered you عندماwhen جنحَتit inclined
حتى ذكرتُكَ عندما جنحَت
فرأيتُهاso I saw it جنحَتit inclined إلىtoward ذِكريmy recollection
فرأيتُها جنحَت إلى ذِكري
Until I remembered you when my soul inclined,
When I mentioned you as dusk fell
And saw it incline toward my recollection;
I saw it incline toward my memory
واستبشَرَتand it rejoiced والنفسُand the soul آلفةٌaccustomed
واستبشَرَت والنفسُ آلفةٌ
بقديمto the longstanding ماwhat عرفتit knew منof البِشرِgladness
بقديم ما عرفت من البِشرِ
And it rejoiced—the soul is accustomed
It rejoiced and my soul grew accustomed
To the gladness it had known of old.
To the familiar faces it once knew
ولطولِand because of the length of بُعدكَyour absence عنfrom ظُلامتهاits grievance
ولطولِ بُعدكَ عن ظُلامتها
ظلمتit was wronged فماso it did not انتَصرتgain redress أباO father of نصرِNasr
ظلمت فما انتَصرت أبا نصرِ
And because you were so long removed from its grievance,
But because you've been away so long
It was wronged and gained no redress, Abu Nasr.
It grew dark, and could not prevail, oh Abu Nasr
