فارفِق أبا الجَيشِ عَلى الناسِ
Time has handed the people over to you;
The people have entrusted the vastness to you,
so be gentle, Abu al-Jaysh, with the people.
So go easy, O father of the army, on the people.

If a day brings hardship, he cannot
If there is a day of distress, it does not equate,
be equaled in valor and might.
To prowess and courage.

Even if the year were barren, every man
If the year is arid, every person,
who meets you in it is fed and clothed.
Finds you a provider of drink.

Your palm has known nothing but generosity,
Your hand has known naught but generosity,
and the hilt of the keen-edged sword, and the cup.
And the honorable and the cup.

Bounty feels estranged from its possessors
Blessings feel estranged from their people,
until you greet it with warmth.
Until you encounter them with affection.
