They gazed with swords, their eyelids serving as sheaths,
With swords upon which their sheaths are shut
Keen blades in passion's hands, never betraying those hands.
Blades in the hands of passions that do not betray them
سَواكِنُmotionless إلاexcept أنَّthat بينَbetween جَوانِحيmy ribs
لَهاthey have حَركاتٌmovements يَقتَضِيهاcalls them forth سُكونُهاtheir stillness
Motionless—yet between my ribs
Still but that between my ribs
They have movements that their stillness calls forth.
There are motions that their stillness necessitates
هُوit is السُّقمُsickness / languor إمَّاeither فيin قُلوبٍhearts يُذيبُهاmelts them
كقَلبيlike my heart وإمَّاor else فيin جُفُونٍeyelids يَزينُهاadorns them
It is languor: either in hearts, which it melts,
It is sickness, consuming hearts like mine
Like my own, or in eyelids, which it adorns.
Or adorning eyelids as decoration
فإنso if تَكُare ألحاظُthe glances of الغَوانيbeautiful women ضَعِيفةًweak
فَليthen I have نظَرٌa gaze فيهاupon them قَوِيٌّstrong يُعِينُهاaids them
So if the glances of beautiful women are weak,
If the glances of the flirts are weak
Then I have a strong gaze upon them to lend them aid.
I have a strong gaze to assist them
ومَنand whoever عَبدَworships الأهواءَdesires مثلَlike عِبادَتيmy worship
فَليسَthen he does not يُباليcare أيّwhat دِينٍcreed يَدينُهاhe worships them
And whoever worships desires as I do
And whoever worships passions like I worship them
Cares not under what creed he worships them.
Does not care what religion he believes in
وحَمراءَand a red wine كَالمرِّيخِlike Mars لَوناًin color وَقِدمَةٌand in age

And a red wine, like Mars in color and age,
A redhead the color of Mars, with a freckled complexion
The wine itself arrived after its down payment had gone ahead.
Her eye came when its down payment had gone
فجاءَso he came بِهاwith it القِسِّيسُthe priest يُوصيurging بِصَونِهاfor its safekeeping
وماand not أبتَغيI seek ماnot كنتُI was ممَّنamong those who يَصُونُهاpreserve it
Then the priest brought it, urging that it be preserved;
So the priest brought her, commanding she be guarded
Nor do I seek that; I was never one to preserve it.
But I did not seek what I would have guarded
لهَاit has حَبَبٌbubbles يُنبِيكَtell you عَنof طُولِthe length of عُمرِهاits life

It has bubbles that tell you of its long life.
She has a charm that alerts you to her lifelong youth
Do you not see how its locks have turned gray?
Do you not see her how her horns have become youthful?

I say to its cupbearer, only guessing, that it
I say to her cupbearer guessing she
Passes round, grown so clear that I cannot discern it.
Spins, and her mouth has become gentle, I cannot discern it
ألاpray عَدِّهاturn it aside عَنِّيfrom me حَياءًout of modesty فإنَّنيfor indeed I

Pray, turn it away from me, out of modesty, for I
Please count her away from me out of shyness
See it watching me, its bubbles its eyes.
For I see her looking while her loved ones are her eyes

The singer impregnates it, though he has not touched it,
The hunter provokes her though he does not touch her
And its unborn child grows as joy within souls.
So happiness sprouts in the souls like her fetus

I came by night with it to the house of cares—but how could I?
I came upon her at the home of worries, but how could it
It is the earth entire, or almost so.
Be the land in its entirety or nearly all of it?
ولكننيbut I أحبُوI favor عقُولاًminds بشُربِهاwith drinking it

But I favor minds with a draught of it,
But I love minds drunk with it
So souls forget how their affairs unfold.
So souls forget how their affairs flow
فكلُّfor every فتىًyoung man يَسموrises إلىto حَيثُwhere نَفسُهُhis soul

For every young man rises to where his soul is,
For every young man soars to where his soul is
Ascending through virtues of his own on which he draws.
Lofty in morals he uses to aid himself

Just as the radiant state: where its station lies
As the radiant state, wherever its place is
At the highest horizon, there stands its mighty lord.
From the highest horizon, its nest will be
أبوfather of عَزَماتٍfirm resolves كلُّeveryone مَنwho جاءَcomes بَعدَهafter him

Father of firm resolves: every man who comes after him
Abu Azama, all who come after him
Is their brother and companion, when they stand beside him.
Are its brothers if they are sincere to it
يُجيرُhe grants protection عَلىagainst الأيَّامthe days وهيَwhile they تَوَدُّهُlove him
فَصارَso came to be شَجاهاtheir choking grief عِندَهwith him وشُجُونُهاand their tangled cares
He grants protection against the days, though they love him,
It shelters from the days and it loves him
So their grief and tangled cares have come into his keeping.
So its ardors near him became his ardors

And in all that admits of thanks, you find him possessing
And it meets him in what gratitude can gain
Deeds to which all gratitude is pledged.
Over deeds every gratitude is indebted to
فقَدfor indeed جُدِّدَhas been renewed الطُّوفانُthe Flood فيon الأرضِthe earth والتَقَىand met

For the Flood has been renewed on earth, and together meet
So the flood on earth was renewed and its surge met
Through his hands' bounty its rainclouds and flowing waters.
With the generosity of his hands, its pillar and its refuge

When the seas of calamity roar and surge,
When the seas of afflictions surge tempestuously
Then the full-grown, swimming steeds are their ships.
The floating palm trees are its ships

Their headlong course is like the gusts of wind,
Agitated by gusts of wind like wind gusts
Toward every crisis, with the winds for tethers.
To every plight as the winds roam

Life is cheap to him, while the coward prizes it;
They seem trivial to him though the coward esteems them
And none honors the self except one who abases it.
And nothing animates the soul but debasing it

And if his counsels send white blades far ahead of him,
And if its views take the lead before the whites’
Then red deaths and black ones follow in their wake.
Then its followers are the red deaths and their illnesses

He unites the lions beneath his banner,
It brings together the lion under its banner
And every place he settles is their den.
And every place its den occupied

They charge, but not at every moment; only
Unremitting, not at every time, but only
When he wills to charge with them does their moment come.
When it wanted to race with them did its time come

He clothed them as men are clothed, so they became hard to distinguish;
It clothed them as men are clothed so they became ambiguous
And souls doubted, then their certainty became firm.
And souls doubted, then its certainty became clear

We took the tales of noble men by allotment:
We took the accounts of the generous in portions
Their chains of transmission lie with us, their substance with them.
Its chains with us and its texts with them

If an ode is released praising me
May you be its companion in long life.
I wish you to be its companion in prolonged survival
