بَحَsecond fragment of 'became' فيهin it لكلِّfor every عَينٍeye عَلامَهa sign
بَحَ فيه لكلِّ عَينٍ عَلامَه
Then I began hiding from people what had come
Then I became the one who conceals from people what has
to bear a sign for every eye.
Become apparent to every eye as a mark
أستُرُI conceal الحالَةthe condition التيthat هَتَكَتنيhas laid me bare

فأُقاسي عَداوةً ومَلامَه
I conceal the plight that has laid me bare,
I hide the condition that exposed me
and so suffer enmity and reproach.
So I endure enmity and blame

Then, considering you and it, I resolved
Then I saw in you and in her
to bring it to you as a grievance,
That I attributed its darkness to you

when nothing remained but your judgment—so consider
When there remained none other than your opinion, so look
what you think, O Muhammad ibn Salama.
What you see, O Muhammad ibn Salamah
