أعادَتكَbrought you back فيin حالِthe state of الهَوىlove عَودةالفتَنthe return of temptations

ولاand no مَلجأٌrefuge منfrom ذاكَthat إلاexcept لِمَنfor whom ومَنand whom
The return of temptations has brought you back into a state of love.
The allure of passion has returned you
And there is no refuge from that—save for whom, and whom?
And there is no refuge from that except for one with restraint
فَفِيمَso why تَعقَّبتَyou pursued التَّصابيyouthful dalliance ألمdid ... not? تكُنyou were
كمَنlike one who لمnot يكُنhe was قِدماًformerly إلىto سَكنٍa beloved سَكَنfound repose
So why did you pursue youthful dalliance? Were you not
So why did you pursue ecstasy, were you not
Like one who had never before found repose with a beloved?
Like one who settled without having settled?

وفيand in مِثلهاone like it مِنfrom قَبلهاbefore it كنتَyou were مُرتَهَنheld captive
Come to your senses: this is not your first spell of intoxication;
Awaken, for this is not the first intoxication
And before this, you were held captive in one like it.
And in the like of it before you were hostage
ومُنصِفةِand a fair-dealing woman الأجفانِthe eyelids فيin قسمةِapportioning الضَّنَىlovesickness

And a woman whose eyelids deal fairly in apportioning lovesickness—
The doer of injustice with eyelids in dividing sadness
On examination, hers is the largest share of it.
Has the greatest share of it when tested

You suppose her in love, from her extreme delicacy,
You think that because of the intensity of fancy's luxury
As though she and I were partners in sorrow.
That she and I are partners in anguish
وإنَّand indeed دمُوعاًtears سافَرتtraveled بحدِيثِناwith our tale

And indeed, tears that have traveled bearing our tale,
And tears traveled with our conversation
Spreading it over all that the pouring raincloud has covered,
Spreading what the glancing calamity spread
لتُغنِيكمُsurely spare you all عنfrom كشفِuncovering حاليmy condition وحالِهاand her condition

Surely spare you the need to uncover my condition and hers;
To spare you from revealing my state and hers
And even less than these has brought the secret into the open.
And below her is what joined secret with public

Word of me has undertaken to cross every desert;
You obliged mention of me cutting off every expanse
So if it were glory, I would say what al-Hasan said.
Otherwise I would have said what al-Hassan said
