خَلتِstood empty الديارُthe dwellings منof الحَبيبِthe beloved وشَخصِهِand his person
فالشوقُso longing يعملُworks فيupon السلوِّsolace ونَقصِهِand its diminution
The dwellings are empty of the beloved and his presence.
The dwellings are empty of the beloved and his person
So longing works upon solace, diminishing it.
So longing works in the nights and their decrease
ولقدand indeed حَرصتُI was eager علىfor التجلُّدِfortitude بعدَهafter him
لوif only كانwas يَنتَفعُbenefiting الحَريصُthe eager man بحرصِهِfrom his eagerness
And indeed I was eager to bear up after he was gone—
And I have striven to show fortitude after him
if only the eager man could profit from his eagerness!
If only the one who strives could benefit by his striving
ولبستُand I donned أرديةَthe robes of السقامِsickness بمنbecause of one who غَداwent forth
يَمشيwalking بأردِيةِin the robes of الجَمالِbeauty وقمصِهِand its shirts
And I donned the robes of sickness because of one who went forth
And I have worn the robes of sickness for one who went away
walking in beauty's robes and shirts.
Walking in the robes of beauty and its shirt
