She put herself in my path; had I been on my guard,

my eye would not have had its way in the pleasure of gazing.

And I would have lowered my gaze, not satisfied its desire

for her, knowing the consequences of that gaze.

And a man, so long as he has an eye he keeps turning

toward the eyes of wide-eyed beauties, stands in peril.

What harms his soul delights his eye.

No welcome to joy that brings harm!

Until you see his heart exposed to plunder,

as though it were the money in Abu Umar's right hand.

You see it freely available there; he does not withhold it

from anyone who comes seeking it, among all humankind.

An innate disposition in giving, never altered

by the recurring nights as they bring changes of fortune.

And a resolve ever radiant through time,

lofty, though circumstance counters it with constraint.

He whose life has a clear portion—whoever seeks him

gains it, while he himself is content with its dregs.

My verse tells you, if you listen to it,

as does his conduct, that we have met as fate decreed.
