    نجلاءُ تَرنو والمَها من مَحجرِ

    She gazed—may she never gaze!—with an oryx calf's eye;

Wide-eyed, she and the oryxes gaze from a single eye socket.

I behold the figure of death, emerging,

Appearing to us from it in the fairest guise.

If the armies of her languor encamp within her eye,

Then her glances meet you with an army's armament:

Every gleaming, cleaving sword and nocked arrow

That always hits its mark, and every dusky, stout spear.

And as though hearts had raided her eyelids,

    Then retreated, wounded, without victory:

    Forever wronged in every wilderness,

Slain as captives, though they showed no patience.

What are hearts compared with eyelids? And these,

Since they unleashed their power, have never been overcome.

Many a graceful maiden unveiled, yet her modesty

Told you that she had not unveiled.

So it was as though she had lifted a white veil,

On the day we met, from a red veil.

Journey to me in fellowship when she forsakes me,

O phantom of her, and forsake me when she does not.

    فإذا تَمادى غَدرُها بي فاغدرِ

    Or remain with us in loyalty when she keeps faith;

And if her betrayal of me persists, then betray me.

Do you think the nights have altered my resolve,

To which the heights of glory said, 'Do not change'?

And the bounty of Abu al-Hasan al-Khatib spoke

To their calamities, when they overreached: 'Desist!'

He who forever buys with his intact wealth,

Through his bounty, glory at Jupiter's height.

So it is as though he were excused for what

His hand holds—unless he spends it all, he is not excused.

And it is as though his hand, through its giving, almost

Infects the pulpit's wood with generous giving.

He has a radiant brow that now signals bounty,

As lightning signals the rain-bearing clouds.
