O one man, dead, who when
O you, one in death, though when
O you who were a thousand when alive
alive was as a thousand men!
you were alive, you were a thousand.
And now deceased is naught
لَهفيmy grief عَليكَfor you وحُقَّand it is justified ليfor me
لَهفي عَليكَ وحُقَّ لي

فيما أَرى لَو متُّ لَهفا
Ah, my grief for you! And it would be fitting for me,
My grief for you! And I would be justified,
I yearn for you, and it is my right
as I see it, if I died of grief.
as I see it, were I to die of grief.
To yearn, if I had died, with longing
