تمَّbecame complete شُكريmy gratitude يدَthe hand of الزَّمانِtime بيَومٍby a day
طالَماso often قبَلَهbefore it ذمَمتُI blamed الزَّماناtime
My gratitude to the hand of time was made complete by a day
My gratitude extended to time's hand one day
before which I had so often blamed time.
For long have I blamed time in every way
فيهon it دارَتcame round عليَّto me كأسُa cup of غَرامٍpassion
أسكرَتنيmade me drunk ولمand not أزَلI cease to be سَكراناdrunk
On that day, a cup of passion came round to me;
The cup of love came round to me
it made me drunk, and I have remained drunk.
It intoxicated me, and drunk I still be
حَمَلَتهاbore it جُفونُthe eyelids of عَينَيthe two eyes of غَزالٍa gazelle

The eyelids of a gazelle’s two eyes bore it;
It was carried by the lids of a gazelle's eyes
by bearing it, they burdened me with sorrows.
And with its burden saddened me with sighs
طرفُهُhis gaze كاسمِهِlike his name يُقاتِلfights قَلبيmy heart
ولكَمand how often صاحَcried out منهfrom him قَلبيmy heart الأَماناmercy
His gaze, like his name, fights my heart;
Its glances like arrows pierced my heart
and how often my heart has cried out for mercy from him!
And how my heart for mercy cried out its part
