وهاand here is فُؤاديmy heart مَعيwith me بَعدafter النَّوىseparation باقِremaining
My eyes' inner corners were not worn away by tears after parting,
The tears of parting are still wet upon my cheek,
and here my heart remains with me after separation.
And still my heart remains with my beloved.
ردَدتُI returned كأسَthe cup غَراميmy passion وهيَwhile it was مترعةٌbrimming
كَماjust as سقيتُI was given drink بِهاin it صِرفاًunmixed wine عَلىto الساقيthe cupbearer
I returned the cup of my passion, still brimming,
I drank the wine of love though it was bitter,
to the cupbearer, just as I had been served unmixed wine in it.
As I had poured it for the cupbearer.
وصارَand became قَلبيَmy heart لاnot يَشتاقُyearns مُذsince حكمَتruled
يدُthe hand الملامَةِreproach فيهِover it غيرَnot مُشتاقِlonging
And my heart no longer yearns, ever since
Since you decided, my heart no longer yearns,
the hand of reproach ruled over it, leaving it without longing.
No longer desiring, though blamed for detachment.
لاdo not تَفزَعنَّseek refuge إلىin غَيرanything other than النَّوىseparation أَبداًever
فَماfor there is no لِداءِfor the sickness of الهَوىlove غَيرُother than النوىseparation راقِa healer by incantation
Never seek refuge in anything but separation,
Never despair except for your beloved,
for love's sickness has no healer but separation.
For no remedy cures love but the beloved.
قَتيلُone slain by همَّتِهhis ambition فيamong الناسِpeople أعذرُmore excusable منthan

قَتيلِone slain by تَكسيرِlanguid lowering أجفانٍeyelids وأَحداقِand pupils
One slain by his own ambition is more excusable among people than
He who fails the people is more excused
one slain by the languid play of eyelids and pupils.
Than one slain by glances and eyelids attacking.

And a languid-eyed one with whom sickness is smitten—
Languid eyes reveal lovesick distress,
as though my body were his shield against its harm.
As if my body suffers from its harm, unprotected.

I remained in his captivity as long as his eye wished,
I remained his captive by his watcher’s will
until the hair on his cheeks brought my release.
Until my cheek’s hair was freed by his release.

If I feared the calamity of separation in anguish,
If I feared the blows of fate in dread,
then my confession has shown you how great my fear was.
My confession reveals my excess of caution.

Let fate not think me, in the face of its visitations,
Do not think that I am blind to destiny’s nights
blind, when it sees my gaze lowered away from them.
When you see me turn my eyes away from them.

For fate's vicissitudes have their times, which end
For fate has its times, and in the end
when I ask Ishaq's hand to turn them away.
Its events are fulfilled from the palm of the Ordainer.

A hand that bestows bounty and glory on whoever it meets,
A hand that gives dew and glory to its greeter,
until the hand of the one who meets it almost equals it.
Until it nearly equals the hand that meets it.

He sets out in the morning, the hilt of glory's sword filling his hand,
Rising in the morn, the sword of glory fills it,
then turns back from the spilled blood of miserliness.
Then it spares the blood of those withholding generosity.
