علمَknew الهَوىlove أنيthat I عَليهاover it قادرcapable
يُنبيكَinforms you أنيthat I للصَّبابةِin passionate longing صابِرُpatient
Love knew that I could master it;
Love taught me that I have power over her
it tells you that I endure longing patiently.
Your eyes tell me that I am patient with youth
والناسُand people فيكَconcerning you مصدقٌbelieving ومكذِّبٌand disbelieving
ليme فيin هواكَlove for you وعاذلٌand reproaching أوor عاذِرُexcusing
And people, concerning you, either believe or disbelieve
People believe and disbelieve about you
me in my love for you, and either reproach or excuse me.
I have in your love both blamer and excuser
ماnot عاينَتbeheld عيناكَyour two eyes جِسماًa body فاتِراًlanguid
إلاexcept وآفةُand the bane of ذاكَthat طرفٌa glance فاتِرُlanguid
Never have your eyes beheld a languid body
Your eyes have not seen an apathetic body
without a languid glance being its bane.
Except that the flaw of that is an apathetic glance
وإذاand if مررتَyou pass بناظرٍby an eye يَبكيweeps دَماًblood
أسَفاًin sorrow فماthen not أبكاهُmade it weep إلاexcept ناظِرُan eye
And if you pass an eye that weeps blood,
And if you pass by a weeping eye, blood
in sorrow, only an eye has made it weep.
Out of sorrow, nothing makes it weep but a glance
ياO ساحِرsorcerer of اللحظاتِglances ليسَتare not وحدهاon their own
أناI فيin خَلاصيmy escape منfrom يَديَهاtheir two hands ساحِرُa sorcerer
O sorcerer of glances, they are not alone:
O enchanter of glances, not only me
I too am a sorcerer in freeing myself from their hands.
I who charm myself out of their grip, am an enchanter
وإذاand when صَبرتُI held firm علىagainst التَّصابيyouthful dalliance ردَّنيdrew me back
قلبٌa heart يُراوِحُنيvisits me in the evening بِهاwith it ويُباكِرُand comes early in the morning
And when I stand firm against youthful dalliance, I am drawn back
If I am patient with the ardors, my heart returns me
by a heart that visits me with longing, evening and morning.
It fans me with them and wakes early
مُستَوطِنٌsettled قَلبيmy heart إذاwhen ماemphatic particle استَوطَنواthey settled
ومسافرٌand traveling معهمwith them إذاwhen ماemphatic particle سافَرواthey traveled
My heart settles when they settle,
Settled in my heart when they settle
and travels with them when they travel.
And traveling with them when they travel
فإذاso when وفَواthey kept faith ليwith me بالودادِin affection وفىit kept faith بهwith it
وإذاand when هُمُthey غَدرواthey betrayed فقلبٌthen a heart غادِرُtreacherous
So when they are faithful to me in love, it remains faithful to that love;
So if they keep faith with me in affection, it keeps faith with it
and when they betray, my heart is treacherous.
And if they betray, the heart is a betrayer
وإذاand if استجارَit sought refuge فلاthen do not تُجِرهُshelter it منfrom النوىseparation
واعلَمand know بأنَّthat المُستَجيرَthe seeker of refuge الجائِرُthe wrongdoer
And if it seeks refuge, do not shelter it from separation;
And if it seeks refuge, do not give it refuge from determination
and know that the one seeking refuge is the wrongdoer.
And know that the refugee is unjust
ياO نائباتِcalamities of الدهرtime حسبُكِenough for you فاقصِريso desist
قَصُرتhas fallen short يديmy hand ضَعفاًthrough weakness وقلand grew scarce الناصِرُthe helper
O calamities of time, enough—desist!
O substitutes of fate, enough, shorten
My hand has fallen short through weakness, and helpers have grown few.
My hand weakened, and the supporter said little
إنif كانَwas همّاًa sorrow واحِداًone يكفيكِsuffices you ليfor me
فالمَرعَشيُّthen al-Marʿashi إذاwhen عدَدتُI counted العاشِرُthe tenth
If one sorrow of mine is enough for you,
If one care is enough for you against me
then al-Marʿashi, when I count, is the tenth.
Then I, when counted, am the tenth
ياO حامليهِyou who bear him ترفَّقواbe gentle بسَريرهwith his bier
للَهfor God فيin ذاكَthat السريرِbier سَرائِرُhidden secrets
O you who bear him, be gentle with his bier;
O you who carry his bier, be gentle with his litter
God has hidden mysteries within that bier.
For God, in that litter, there are mysteries
ويودُّand wishes زائرُthe visitor to قَبرهhis grave مماfrom what بهis in him
أنَّthat البلادَthe lands بماwith what حوَتهthey contained it مقابِرُgraves
And the visitor to his grave, in his anguish, wishes
And a visitor to his grave would wish from what is in it
that the lands, with all they hold, were graves.
That the countries are filled with their graves
