فاستَأذَنَتso she asked permission أَنto تَحطَّshe sets down رَحليmy saddle
Love had long enfolded my whole being,
The embrace of passion stayed long with me
So she asked leave to set down my saddle.
So it asked leave to unload my burdens
أملَلتُهاI wearied her والمَلالُand weariness شَيءٌa thing
يَحدُثُarises فيin مِثلِهits like التَّسلِّيforgetting one's love
I wearied her, and weariness is a thing
I denied it, though denial
In cases like which, one forgets one's love.
In such cases brings some relief
وأَهيَفٍand a slender-waisted youth لاnot يَدينُhe professes دِينيmy faith
وَلاand not إِلَىtoward قِبلَتيmy direction of prayer يُصَلِّيhe prays
And a slender-waisted youth who does not profess my faith,
Passion is an aimless wanderer
Nor does he pray toward my qibla.
With no religion or qibla to pray to
كانَwas فُؤاديmy heart بِغَيرِwithout والٍa ruler
وكُنتُand I was أَحتالُI seek a way مَنwhom أُوَلِّيI appoint as ruler
My heart was without a ruler,
My heart was loyal to another
And I was trying to decide whom to appoint.
So I schemed on who to give allegiance
