كأنَّماas though لَونُهُits color وقَدand already نَثَرَتscattered
كأنَّما لَونُهُ وقَد نَثَرَت
يدُhand النَّدامىthe drinking companions عليهِupon it لَونَينِtwo colors
يدُ النَّدامى عليهِ لَونَينِ
It is as though its hue, after the scattering
As though its hue when contrite hands had shed
Of two colors upon it by the drinking companions’ hand,
O'er it a double tincture, cloth dyed red
ثَوبٌa robe منof الدستريDastari cloth خُضرَتُهits greenness
ثَوبٌ من الدستري خُضرَتُه
قدalready فُصِّلتwas adorned باللُّجَينِwith silver والعَينِand gold
قد فُصِّلت باللُّجَينِ والعَينِ
Were a robe of Dastari cloth, whose green hue
With lujayn, mixed with 'ayn; like revelry,
Has been adorned with silver and gold.
The mourner's hands had made the red dye three.
