Is this avoidance out of anguish or patience,
Is this avoidance due to anxiety or patience
for fear of a talebearer, or in repayment for abandonment?
Out of fear of a slanderer or a reward for estrangement
فمِنfor from حيثُwhere لاnot يُرجَىis hoped for الوَفاءfidelity رَجوتَهyou hoped for it
ومنand from حيثُwhere يُخشَىis feared الغَدرtreachery سارَعتَyou hastened فيinto الغَدرِtreachery
For where fidelity is not expected, you hoped for it,
So from where loyalty was not hoped for, you hoped for it
and where treachery is feared, you hastened into treachery.
And from where betrayal was feared, you were quick to betray
أماare ... not? أنتَyou منamong أهلِthe people of الهَوىlove منamong ذَويthose possessed of الأسَىsorrow
منamong القَومthe people تحتَunder النَّهيprohibition فيin الحبِّlove والأمرِand command
Are you not one of love’s people, one of the sorrowful,
You are indeed of those who love, of those who grieve
one of those subject in love to prohibition and command?
Of the people forbidden in love and matters
ومنand whoever صدَّturned away تَخفيفاًfor relief فقدso indeed قامَserved صدُّهhis turning away
لمنfor one who لمdid not يَجدfind عُذراًan excuse علىfor الصدِّturning away بالعُذرِas an excuse
And whoever turns away for relief, his turning away has served
And whoever turns away to alleviate, his turning away
as an excuse for one who found no excuse for turning away.
Becomes for those who find no excuse for rejection, an excuse
