Is there an ailing lover as love-distraught as I,

so I might set him to reproach you, O reproacher?

Or is every heart but mine, in love,

distraught with the ardent longing it conceals?

    فاكتُم مَعي يا طرفُ ما أنا كاتِمُ

    O heart, you led me down the paths of love;

so hide with me, O eye, what I am hiding.

    سُحبُ المَلام بِها عَليَّ سَواجِمُ

    Your streaming tears bring no relief;

because of them, clouds of reproach rain down on me.

And a slender beloved, whose eyelids forever wield

spells over the hardest heart whenever it defies him:

I parted from him, until it seemed that parting from him,

O my reproacher, was, like loving him, an inescapable decree.

When I resolved upon it, love told me

that I was resolved to plunge into death.

And in this I wronged separation when I said:

"My heart is the wronged one, and it is the wrongdoer."

Love has demolished what it once made flourish

within you, O dwelling; every builder is a destroyer.

Once you were banners of joy; but since

time's vicissitudes assailed you, you are mere traces.

If night savored the taste of slumber,

night would sleep apart from me, while I remained awake.

Or if it knew how long my anguish in love endured,

it would not linger—yet it knows my anguish's length.

Whoever makes seeking eminence his concern is not turned

from it by sleeplessness or endless sleep.

How can love's sorcery betray a man

when he wears talismans from seeking the emir?

Submit every calamity to Bakjur for judgment,

for his keen sword is your judge in calamity.

O you who repel swimming steeds with swimming steeds,

while war is a sea whose waves crash together.

If al-Sayfi flashes a sword that thunders

with blows, the rain comes—and it is skulls.

    فهيَ السَّماءُ صَواعِقٌ وغَمائِمُ

    His palm holds keen swords and noble deeds;

so it is the sky: thunderbolts and clouds.

If death has suddenly overtaken Sayf al-Din,

then Abu al-Fawaris is his edge and hilt.

His fierce might and battle prowess tell you

that the stalwarts among men are non-Arabs.

It is the horsemen's doom that you are called their father,

yet Abu al-Fawaris is merciful to horsemen.

How often you stood smiling in a place

where frowning abounded and those who smiled were few.

The wild lions fled from it, so you will never see

in it any but a lion whose father is Adam.

You mounted men who never tire of night journeys

on thoroughbred horses that have no legs.

So it is as though they sought an embrace among themselves,

for their hands and wrists are spread apart.

How strange—a people committed crimes, and were raised high,

along with their renown, after obscurity, by those crimes.

They were lifted up, yet were the lowest; then they were made great,

while their sins were enormities in mankind's eyes.

O you who raid praise with an ambition

for which fair praise forever serves as incantations,

may you ever have your glories woven into verse; through their like

the poet rises high and earns glory.
