إنَّindeed ابنَson of مَعدانَMaʿdān وإنand even though لَمdid not يَدَعleave
إنَّ ابنَ مَعدانَ وإن لَم يَدَع
فيin الجودِgenerosity مَجهوداًeffort ولاnor وُسعاcapacity
في الجودِ مَجهوداً ولا وُسعا
Indeed, Ibn Maʿdān, though he has left no
Though the son of Ma'dan does not profess
effort or strength unspent in generosity,
Generosity or capacity unstressed,
فيماas far as تَراهُyou see him أنَّهthat he واقِفٌstanding still
فيما تَراهُ أنَّه واقِفٌ
وهوwhile he مُجِدٌّdiligent ذاهِبٌgoing forth يَسعَىstrives
وهو مُجِدٌّ ذاهِبٌ يَسعَى
appears to your eyes to be standing still,
You see him pause before the next excess,
yet he is diligent, going forth and striving.
Glorious in onward motion without rest,
يَلتَقِطُgathers الأَخبارَthe news عَنabout كلِّevery ماthing that
يَلتَقِطُ الأَخبارَ عَن كلِّ ما
يُطلَبُis sought فيamong الناسِthe people ويُستَدعىand is requested
يُطلَبُ في الناسِ ويُستَدعى
He gathers news about everything
Gleaning news of all that men request,
sought among people and requested,
Or summon to a hasty interest,
ويَبتَديهمand approaches them first مُستَنيراًillumined بِهby it
ويَبتَديهم مُستَنيراً بِه
مكانَinstead of ماthe act of يَستَرقsteals secretly السَّمعاhearing
مكانَ ما يَستَرق السَّمعا
and, illumined by it, he approaches them first,
Lighting them clearly onward to the best,
rather than stealing a hearing.
Where hearing falls short of full attest.
