إنif مسَّtouched مُسقِمَتيher who sickens me مِنfrom طَرفِهاher gaze سَقَمُsickness
فماthen no ألمَّbefell بهاupon her مِنfrom مَسَّهits touch ألَمُpain
If sickness from her gaze has touched her who sickens me,
Her touch made me sick, from her hand came my illness,
then no pain has befallen her from its touch.
Yet I felt no pain from her touch, only rapture.
عَجبتُI marveled منِّيat myself أراهاI consider her أنَّهاthat she ظلَمَتacted unjustly
ولاand not نَمِينُwe lie عَليهاagainst her إنَّهمindeed they ظُلِمُواwere wronged
I marvel at myself for thinking she has acted unjustly,
I am amazed at myself, seeing her as unjust,
and we tell no lies against her: they have indeed been wronged.
Though she is innocent, they are the unjust ones.
عَلِمتُهاI knew her فهيَso she تَلقانيmeets me تَقولُsays إذاwhen
عايَنتُهاI beheld her مثلَthe like of قَوليmy words فيabout الهَوىlove لهُمُto them
I knew her; so she meets me, saying, whenever
When she meets me she says, if you but saw me
I behold her, words like mine to them about love.
Speaking of love like you, they would blame me too.
وقائمٍand an upright stroke مِنamong سُطُورِthe lines of الحُسنِbeauty معُتَدِلٍwell-proportioned
ماwhat خطَّهُtraced it اللَّهُGod لاnot ماwhat خَطَّهُtraced it القَلَمُthe pen
And an upright, well-proportioned stroke among beauty's lines—
With symmetry of beauty, lines drawn by God,
what God has traced, not what the pen has traced—
Not by the pen, the flawless work of the Divine.
أبصرتُI saw عُهدَةَthe pledge of قلبيmy heart فيهin it بَيِّنَةًclear
بالأمسِyesterday وهيَwhile it عَلىto الأبصارِthe eyes تَنعَجِمُis unreadable
I saw my heart's pledge clearly in it
Yesterday I saw clear in my heart its pledge to her,
yesterday, though it is unreadable to the eyes,
Though to eyes it was obscured, inexplicable.
فيon خدِّthe cheek of أهيَفَa slender-waisted youth ماnot تَرضَىare content لواحِظُهُhis sidelong glances
لَولاwere it not for عِذاراهُhis two sideburns إلاexcept أنthat يُراقَbe shed دَمُblood
on the cheek of a slender-waisted youth whose sidelong glances would settle for nothing
On the cheek of a fawn too shy to allow a glance -
but bloodshed, were it not for his two sideburns.
Only her excuses prevent blood being shed.
كَهِمَّةِlike the ambition of ابنِthe son of عُبَيدِUbayd اللَّهِAllah ماnot رَضِيتwas satisfied
مِنamong المَعاليlofty honors بِماwith what تَرضَىare satisfied لَهfor him الهِمَمُambitions
Like Ibn Ubayd Allah's ambition, which has never been content
I wouldn’t approve, like Ibn Ubayd Allah disapproved,
with the lofty honors that other ambitions deem enough for him.
Of glory compared to what lofty souls desire.
قُلsay لِلعُفَاةِto seekers of bounty إِذاwhen لاذُواthey sought refuge بِراحَتِهِin his palm
وعِندَهاand beside it صاحِباهُhis two companions الجُودُgenerosity والعَدَمُand destitution
Tell the seekers of bounty, when they seek refuge in his palm,
Say to the virtuous, when they seek her rest,
and beside it are his two companions, generosity and destitution:
Where generosity and lack are both found:
لمnot يَبقَremains فيin يدِهِhis hand إلاexcept مكارِمُهُhis noble virtues
فَلاso do not تَلوذواseek refuge بِهاin it ماnot يُوهَبُis bestowed الكَرمُgenerosity
Nothing remains in his hand except his noble virtues;
Only his virtues remain in his hands -
so do not seek refuge in it: generosity cannot be given away.
Do not seek rest where generosity cannot be granted.
لَنwill not يصلِحَstrengthen المالُwealth خصمthe adversary of الجودgenerosity حجَّتَهits case
وأنتَwhile you بينَamong الوَرىhumankind عندin the eyes of الوَرَىhumankind حَكَمُan arbiter
Wealth, generosity's adversary, will never establish its case,
Wealth cannot defend itself against the argument of generosity,
while you, among humankind, are regarded as its arbiter.
And you are the arbiter between East and West.
ماذاwhat رَشاكَbribed you النَّدَىgenerosity حتىso that حَكَمتَyou ruled لهin its favor
حُكماًa judgment سِواكsomeone other than you فأنتَfor you اليَومَtoday متَّهَمُunder suspicion
What did generosity bribe you with, that you ruled in its favor?
What has the dew sprinkled on you, that you judge for it
Let someone other than you give judgment, for today you are under suspicion.
A judgement! None but you today is suspected.
قَدindeed بانَbecame clear جُودُكَyour generosity عِندَto النَّاسِthe people كلِّهمُall of them
وكادَand almost ينكرُdeny ذاكَthat النَّاسُthe people كلُّهُمُall of them
Your generosity has become plain to all the people,
Your generosity is evident to all people,
yet all the people almost deny it.
Nearly all people reject and deny it.
