إذا قصدَ العَوفي وجهاً من العُلى

إذا قصدَ العَوفي وجهاً من العُلى

فكن عنه إن رُمت السلامةَ حائِدا

فكن عنه إن رُمت السلامةَ حائِدا

If al-Awfi seeks some aspect of eminence,

If Al-Awfi aims for the heights of glory,

then keep clear of him if you seek safety.

Turn away, if you seek safety, giving him wide berth.

فما واحدٌ من آل عوفِ بن عامرٍ

فما واحدٌ من آل عوفِ بن عامرٍ

بتاركِ مجدٍ أن يَرى فيه واحِدا

بتاركِ مجدٍ أن يَرى فيه واحِدا

For no one of the house of Awf ibn Amir

For not one man of Awaf ibn Amir’s clan

will yield glory to see another alone in it.

Would forsake glory, were he to see but one.

وعوفٌ كثير في العِداد وفي العُلى

وعوفٌ كثير في العِداد وفي العُلى

ولكنني أعني بذلكَ حامِدا

ولكنني أعني بذلكَ حامِدا

And Awf is numerous in numbers and in eminence,

And though many Awfs there are, high and mighty,

but by that I mean Hamid.

By this name here I mean only Hâmid.
