أرَىI see طارِقاًa night visitor يَصبُوlongs إليَّtoward me ويُصبِينيand makes me yearn
ويُذكرُنيand reminds me ماwhat كانَused to هجرُكَyour estrangement يُنسِينيmake me forget
I see a night visitor who longs for me and kindles my longing,
and reminds me of what your estrangement used to make me forget.
وماand not الجُودُgenerosity منfrom ذيone possessed of البُخلِstinginess إلاexcept مَكيدَةٌa ruse
تُراكُمI wonder whether you طَرقتُمyou came by night فيin الكَرىslumber لِتكيدُونيto plot against me
And generosity from a miser is nothing but a ruse;
I wonder: did you come in slumber to plot against me?
وأهيفَand a slender youth طالَتhas grown long بينَbetween صُدغَيهِhis two temple-locks فُرقَةٌa separation
وعندَand when التَّدانيdrawing near مِنهماof the two فهوَthen he يُدنِينيdraws me near
And a slender youth: the separation between his temple-locks has grown long;
and when the two draw near, he draws me near.
أُراقبُI watch for منهfrom him مَوعِداًan appointment بلِقائهto meet him
إذاwhen التَقَياthe two meet والعمرُand life ليسَis not بِمَضمُونِguaranteed
I watch for his promised meeting,
when the two meet—though life is not assured.
بذلتُI surrendered لَهto him صَبريmy patience ونَوميand my sleep بمَوعِدٍfor a promise
وأجدِرand how fitting بهِfor him أنthat يقتَضِينيhe claims his due from me ويُقضِينيand pays me my due
I surrendered my patience and sleep to him for a promise,
and how fitting for him to claim his due from me and pay me mine!
وأسلَفتُand I paid in advance فيماfor what لاnot أرَىI see ماwhat رَأيتُهI have seen it
علىon الظَّنِّconjecture فَانظُرso look هِمَّتيmy aspiration أينَwhere تُلقِينيit casts me
And I have advanced what I have seen for what I do not see,
on conjecture—see where my aspiration casts me.
وتغتنمand exploit الأيَّامُthe days شُغليmy preoccupation بحبِّهwith loving him
وتأمنُand feel secure منfrom أنthat أتَّقِيهاI guard against them فَتَرمِينيso they shoot at me
And the days exploit my absorption in love for him,
and, sure I will not guard against them, they shoot at me.
وعندَand with أبيAbu (father of) سَعدٍSa'd منof الجُودِgenerosity جُنَّةٌa shield
تُحصِّنُprotects مَنwhoever يَلقَىconfronts بِهاwith it أيَّthe utmost تَحصِينِprotection
And Abu Sa'd has a shield of generosity,
that gives the strongest protection to whoever faces trouble with it.
وَهاand here أناI فِيهاwithin it كلُّevery شيءٍthing يُصِيبُنيstrikes at me
بهِwith it الدَّهرُTime منfrom نَبلِarrows الحَوادثِcalamities يُخطِينيmisses me
And here I am within it: everything aimed at me
by Time, from the arrows of calamity, misses me.
أبثُّكَI confide to you ماwhat لِلعِيدfor Eid عِنديwith me وأبتَديand I begin
أُهنِّيكَI congratulate you باليَومon the day الَّذيwhich ليسَdoes not يَهنِينِيbring me joy
I tell you what I have for Eid, and begin
to congratulate you on the day that brings me no joy.
مَلابسُgarments ليof mine فِيهنَّamong them دِرسُworn remains عِمامةٍof a turban
تحدِّثُنيit tells me عَنabout لابسِيهاits wearers فَتُلهينيand so distracts me
I have garments, among them a worn-out turban,
which tells me of its wearers and distracts me,
كأنَّas though كتابَthe book المُبتَدىthe beginning فيin سُلوكهاits threads
بتاريخهِwith its history مِنfrom كلِّevery حينٍage إلىto حِينِage
as though the Book of Beginnings lay in its threads,
with its history, from one age to another.
مَتىwhenever حُرِّكتit is moved غنَّتit sings ولكنand yet يسُوؤُنيit pains me
إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنthere is ليfor me غَيرُهاanything other than it أنthat تُغنِّينيit sings to me
Whenever it is moved, it sings; yet it pains me,
when I have nothing else, that it should sing to me.
فلمَّاso when أقامَset up الناسُthe people فَضلَكَyour bounty بَينهُمamong them
مِثالاًas a standard وساوانيand equaled me بذلِكَthrough that مَنthose دُونيbelow me
So when people set your bounty among them
as a standard, and those below me thereby became my equals,
مَحوتُI erased بهthrough it ماwhat كانَwas ليmine منof نُفُوسِهمtheir souls
وصرتُand I came to be إِذاwhenever جاوَزتُI exceeded حدَّكَyour limit رَدُّونيthey sent me back
I thereby erased the esteem I once had in their hearts,
and now, whenever I exceed your limit, they send me back.
فقلتُso I said احتِجاجاًin defense للنَّدىfor generosity وحَمِيَّةًand zealous pride
وغَيرةَand the jealousy مَشعُوفٍof one passionately smitten بمَجدِكَwith your glory مَفتُونِenthralled
So I said, in defense of generosity and out of zealous pride,
and with the jealousy of one enamored of your glory and enthralled by it:
ألستُمare you not تَرَونَyou see الأرضَthe earth تُمطرُis rained upon كلُّهاall of it
وفيهاand in it سِباخٌsalt flats نَفعُهاtheir benefit غيرُnot مَظنونِexpected
Do you not see that all the earth receives rain,
though it contains salt flats from which no benefit is expected?
فكيفَthen how يكونُbe الغَيثُthe rain غيرَnot مُمَيّزٍdiscriminating
ويُوجَدُand is found بالتَّمييزِwith discrimination جُودُthe generosity ابنِIbn (son of) هارُونِHarun
Then how can the rain be indiscriminate,
yet Ibn Harun's generosity be found to discriminate?
