أقولُI say وقَدand indeed شَدَّstrengthened منof عَزمهِhis resolve
مُقيمٌpersisting عَلىin أنَّهthat he لاnot يَلِينyields
I say, as he has steeled his resolve,
I say though he is determined
Insisting that he will not yield,
To be unbending, obstinate,
وتاهَand acted haughtily عَليناover us بِرفقٍfor kindness لنَاto us
فأكثَرَso he increased مِنof صَبرِناour patience ماwhat يَكونcan be
And lorded it over us for his kindness to us,
Be gentle with us, take us lightly,
Thus stretching our patience to its utmost:
Let your patience exceed ours.
فماso not أنتَyou كِسرىKisra الذيwho تاجُهُhis crown
إذاwhen لاحَgleamed أَشرقَshone منهfrom it الجَبِينthe brow
You are not Kisra, whose crown,
You are not Chosroes whose crown,
When it gleamed, made his brow shine.
When it appears, lights up the forehead.
