عاتَبتُه في تيهِهِ

عاتَبتُه في تيهِهِ

فازدادَ في إِسرافِهِ

فازدادَ في إِسرافِهِ

I reproached him for his haughty disdain,

I reproached him for his haughtiness;

I reproached him for his straying,

But he grew still more extravagant in it.

So he went further in his excesses.

but he only increased his waywardness.

ويَرى خِلافي عامِداً

ويَرى خِلافي عامِداً

فهَجَرتُه لخِلافِهِ

فهَجَرتُه لخِلافِهِ

And, deliberately, he chooses to defy me;

And he deliberately holds a view contrary to mine;

He sees my differing as intentional,

So I abandoned him for his defiance.

So I forsook him for opposing me.

so I shunned him for our differences.

ورَأيتُ عطفَةَ صُدغِهِ

ورَأيتُ عطفَةَ صُدغِهِ

فرَجعتُ في استِعطافِهِ

فرَجعتُ في استِعطافِهِ

But then I saw the curve of his temple-lock,

And I saw the curve of his temple-lock;

But I saw tenderness in his cheek,

And returned to seeking his favor.

So I returned to seeking his affection.

and so I returned, entreating his forgiveness.
