I jested about love with one of slender waist,
I jested not with love, though withered my liver,
and earnestness begins where jesting ends.
And jest's commencement is the end of all earnest.

His glance wounds me; how then could he heal?
me, when he cannot see the mouth of the wound?
He wearies me, since he sees not the wounded.

An inlet to explanation if thou ask.

I glimpsed him and roused a dormant passion,
I saw him and was stung. I hid my love,
swifter, in its telling, than a glance.
Swifter to conceal it than a glance.

Nor quits he me, unwearied to be quit.

for one like dawn, not dawn itself.
One who resembles dawn, but is no dawn.

may you fall in love and receive advice like this!
Passionately loving, like my counselling.

If you must blame someone
If thou must chide, chide gently one who loves,
who loved something, then blame Abu al-Fath.
Not him who turned his face from high emprise.
