ودَّعتُهI bade him farewell والدَّمعُand the tears فيin مُقلَتيmy eye
فيin عَبرَتيmy weeping مُستجعلٌhastening (apparently intended: مستعجل) مُسرعُrushing
I bade him farewell, while the tears in my eye
I bid him farewell, with tears in my eyelids
hastened and rushed as I wept.
My sorrow manifest, hastening in grief
فظَنَّso he thought إِذwhen أَبصَرتُهاI saw it أنَّهاthat it
سائِرall أَعضائيmy limbs بِهاthrough it تَدمعُweep
So he thought, when I saw it, that
He thought, when he saw them, that they were
all my limbs were weeping through it.
All my limbs with them shedding tears
وقالَand he said هَذاthis قبلَbefore يَومthe day النَّوىof parting
فَماso what تَرىdo you think بَعدafter النَّوىparting تَصنَعُwill you do
And he said, “This, before the day of parting!
And said: "This was before the day of parting
What, then, do you think you will do after parting?
So what will you do after parting?"
فيat غَيرِother than وقتِthe time الدَّمعof tears ضيَّعتهyou squandered it
قلتُI said فقَلبيbut my heart عندَكمwith you أضيَعُmore squandered
You squandered it when it was not yet time for tears.”
I wasted it at the wrong time for tears
I said, “But my heart is even more squandered in your keeping.”
I said: "My heart with you I have lost"
