تعلَّمhe learned مِنfrom مَولاهhis master طولthe length of حجابهhis seclusion
تعلَّم مِن مَولاه طول حجابه
لينقطعso that they may cease الحجابthe doorkeepers عنfrom قصدseeking بابهِhis door
لينقطع الحجاب عن قصد بابهِ
He learned from his master to prolong his seclusion,
He learned from his Master to prolong his veil
so that the doorkeepers would cease seeking his door.
That the veil might be lifted by way of His door
شريفانtwo noblemen ذاكthat one ابنson of النبيِّthe Prophet محمدٍMuhammad
شريفان ذاك ابن النبيِّ محمدٍ
وهذاand this one ابنson of روحSpirit of القدسholiness حشوfilling إهابهِhis skin
وهذا ابن روح القدس حشو إهابهِ
Two noblemen: that one a son of the Prophet Muhammad,
Noble is he, the son of the Prophet Muhammad
and this one a son of the Holy Spirit, which fills his skin.
And this is the son of the Spirit of Holiness adorned with his raiment
لقدindeed ضاعَwent to waste شعريmy poetry بينَbetween عيسىJesus بنson of مَريمMary
لقد ضاعَ شعري بينَ عيسى بن مَريم
وبينand between رسولthe Messenger of اللَهGod نيلُobtaining ثَوابهِits reward
وبين رسول اللَه نيلُ ثَوابهِ
My poetry has indeed gone to waste between Jesus, son of Mary,
My poetry was lost between Jesus son of Mary
and the Messenger of God—its reward unattained.
And the Messenger of God, the attainment of his reward
