Have you seen in me fear of any misfortune

In love, unless it be separation?

The humiliation of estrangement is like that of union, when

Your lover has suffered in love what he has suffered.

By a beauty’s eyelids, which shot; then were staked

Our souls, as prizes for her arrowheads.

Lovers love nothing from her glances

But a sickness that loves lovers.

She turned away; I did not lose heart, and said in hope:

He who restored Ishaq to me will bring her back.

After your reversals had come between me and him,

O treacherous Time, and kept him away.

And I endured the life you had clouded,

Until, despite you, it grew clear and pleasant,

Through a youth, as though glory had granted him

A covenant that it would answer none but him.

Do not marvel at one who sees you and some of what

You do, and so, because of you, takes al-Sham for Iraq.
