حاكِمُthe judge of الحبِّlove عَليهاagainst her ليin my favor بِدَمfor blood
She denied knowing me when judgment was passed
by Love's judge against her, in my favor, for bloodshed.
فبَدَتthen appeared منfrom ناظِرَيهاher two eyes نَظرةٌa glance

Then from her two eyes a glance appeared
that brought her under suspicion for my blood.
وتَمكَّنتُand I gained mastery فأضنَيتُso I enfeebled ضَنىًwasting sickness
كانَwas بيin me مِنهاfrom her وأَسقَمتُand I sickened سَقَمsickness
And I gained mastery, and enfeebled the wasting sickness
I had suffered through her, and made sickness itself sick.

And after shunning me, she grew passionately enamored,
turning her spoken 'no' to 'yes.'

And I lost my longing for her and my sorrow,
so I felt pain at the loss of pain.
ماwhat لِعَينيwith my eye وفُؤاديand my heart كلَّماwhenever

كتَمَتthe eye conceals باحَthe heart reveals وإنand if باحَتthe eye reveals كَتَمthe heart conceals
What ails my eye and my heart? Whenever
the eye conceals, the heart reveals; and if the eye reveals, the heart conceals.

ليfor me هُمومٌcares فيover الرَّزاياcalamities وهِمَمand resolves
Their discord long beset me; then there was accord
between my cares over calamities and my resolves.

And al-Mustafa's calamities in his family
are the beginnings of calamities and their end.

O circumambulation, around which a deluge swept,
and Hatim, shattered by the spears of al-Khatt!

They sailed a sea of error and remained unharmed
in it, while Islam among them did not escape harm.

Then it became an enduring custom:
everyone who could oppress did oppress.

And strange it is that justice, through you,
was upheld among the people, yet was not upheld for you.
