ليسَnot تَتركُنيthey leave me وذاكاand that one
ليسَ تَتركُني وذاكا
And misfortunes, Abu Ali,
The stars, O Abū ‘Alī
will not leave me and that one alone.
Do not cease to reproach me thus,
فكَأنَّهاso, as though they مُستَحلَفاتٌhad been made to swear
فكَأنَّها مُستَحلَفاتٌ
أنto تكلِّفَنيburden me كَذاكاin this way
أن تكلِّفَني كَذاكا
It is as though they had been made to swear
As though they had sworn
to burden me in this way.
To burden me forevermore.

They knew that I was not reaching
They know I belong to none

Save you alone in all the world,

قصَرَت يَمينكَ عَن نَداكا
and saw you complaining of hardship
And saw you complaining of cruelty—
that held your right hand back from your bounty.
Your right hand falls short of your gifts.

So they hurled me at you, until we shared
So they pelt you with me that we share,
in condemning them together.
In their blame, a common fate.
