مَتىwhen صارَتbecame الجُردُthe sleek steeds المَذاكيthe full-grown ones سَفائِناships
لِماfor whatever شِئتَyou wished منof برٍّland وبَحرٍand sea ضَوامِناguarantors
When did sleek, full-grown steeds become ships,
When did the barren hills become our ships
guaranteeing whatever you wished, on land and sea?
To wherever you wanted on land or in the stormy sea
ومِنand because of ثقةِthe trust of الرُّوميthe Byzantine بالماءِin the water مَركباًas a mount
يَفوتُhe outstrips عَليهupon it الخيلَthe horses وافاكَhe came to you آمِناfeeling safe
And so great was the Byzantine's trust in water as a mount,
And the Roman had such faith in the water a vessel
on which he outstrips horses, that he came to you feeling safe.
That horses passed by it while he was safe and secure
أعدَّhe made ready وجاءَتكَand came to you الرِّياحُthe winds تسُوقُهdriving him
يعدُّcounting إلىtoward المَوتِdeath القُرىthe villages والمَدائِناand the cities
He made ready, and the winds came driving him to you,
The winds came and drove it to you
as he counted villages and cities on his way to death.
It counts back to death, the villages and cities
وقدand already كانَتhad been الأخبارُthe reports عنكَabout you تَناصَرتcorroborating one another
فماso what بالُهاis the matter with them لمdid not تُغنِهspare him أنto يُعايِناsee for himself
Reports about you had already confirmed one another;
And the news about you was continuous
so why did they not spare him seeing for himself?
Why could it not avail him to see
فأوهَمكُمso he made you all imagine كرّاًa charge وفرّاًand a retreat وإنَّهthough indeed he
ليُحجِمُindeed hangs back مرعُوباًterrified ويُقدِمُand advances حائِناdoomed
So he gave you the illusion of charge and retreat, though he
So he fooled you with frequent attack and retreat and he
indeed hangs back terrified and advances doomed.
Would withdraw frightened and attack grinning
وكانَand was أخوكَyour brother البَحرُthe sea أولَىmore entitled بقَذفهto hurl him
إليكَto you وإنeven though أمسَىhe had become إلىtoward البَحرِthe sea ساكِناtrustful
And your brother, the sea, had more right to hurl him
And the sea, your brother, was more worthy of casting him
to you, though he had come to trust the sea.
To you even if he ended up residing by the sea
فللَّهِso, to God مَوثُوقاًtrusted بهin it كانَit would have been لَوif وَفَىit kept faith
ذَميماًblameworthy ومَحموداًand praiseworthy إذاwhen كانَit was خائِناtreacherous
God be praised for a trusted one: had it kept faith, it would have been
By God, when one trusts in Him if he is faithful
blameworthy; yet it was praiseworthy when it betrayed.
He is reputable even if he is a traitor
صَبرتَyou held firm لِلَفحِagainst the scorching of النَّارِthe fire حتَّىuntil تَركتَهاyou left it

You endured the fire's scorching until you left it
You endured the burning wind until you left
as a dwelling for their souls before their bodies.
Their souls before their bodies residence
وكلّand every طَويلِlong of السَّاعِدَينboth forearms تَظنُّهُyou think him

إذاwhen قامَhe rose يَوماًone day للعِناقِfor an embrace مُطاعِناa spear-fighter
And every long-armed man you would take,
And you thought every long-armed
if he ever rose to embrace, for a spear-fighter.
When he stands one day for a fight, attacking
إذاwhen الوفَويُّونَthe Wafawiyyun استَقامَtook his stand فَريدُهمtheir peerless one

When the Wafawiyyun's peerless one took his stand
When the loyal one straightened their unique one
before them, you became the guarantor of victory.
You became the guarantor of victory before them
