The reproaching woman's gift to me is estrangement,

and her turning away is the gift time bestows on me.

And budding-breasted maidens hold sway over me in love,

while I hold sway over reproaching women in love.

Only my tongue remains sound; so turn away

from me, and do not expose yourself to my tongue.

Is it because I have mastered the reins of your heart

that you wish me to hand my reins to reproach?

Your own soul has lied to you: my hearing is deaf in love

to my reprovers' rebukes, and my heart has gone mad.

God be praised for days whose sweetness I enjoyed,

in the company of reed flute and lutes.

And the companions drank Karkh wine in the morning,

immemorial, from the time of Nusharwan,

from the hand of a cupbearer who, with the knot of her sash,

bound the heart of a lovesick, bewildered man.

So the goblet of our wine in her hand seemed

a champion among horsemen in the arena.

Had you witnessed it, when it had left them

    ranging from drunk to tipsy,

in the land of Shuran, amid its gardens' blossoms,

you would surely have known that merriment comes from Shuran.
