Indeed, a phantom that visited us late at night

From you stirred sorrow in us.

It did not visit us out of longing, but came

To bring the distant to mind through the near.

In every heart that travelled amid your baggage,

    Departing from a worn-out body.

Give back to us what you took of ours,

And deal with us in this again, if we return.

As long as the secrets remain concealed,

People have heard nothing, nor have we spoken.

Our beloved, may there never befall you

At separation's hands what has befallen us.

For it has not escaped you, despite your distance,

What your absence from us has done.

The least of our troubles is that we,

When we kept your pledge, were lost.

It is as though we, when separation scattered us

Through every land and we dispersed,

Were what the clouds bestowed and spread abroad,

Or what Zakariyya, son of Yuhanna, bestowed.

One whose appearance points to his inner character,

As a word points to its meaning.

Love of praise has bred, between him

    And what he owns, enmity.

So this became his way with the two,

For he knows which of the two to treasure.

He has never ceased building a Kaaba for lofty glory,

    And making generosity its cornerstone,

Until people came and circled round him,

    And touched his right palm.

Poems in his praise enrapture you,

Though their poet has composed no melody.

So, enraptured, you cannot tell, when

You hear him, whether he recited or sang.
