مجادِلٌ يَدفعُ ما أدَّعِيه
Nothing is left me but to yield, so long as I have

an adversary refuting all I claim.

إذاwhen ذَممتُI blame الدَّهرَTime فيfor فِعلهِits action
إذا ذَممتُ الدَّهرَ في فِعلهِ
عارَضنيcounters me أنَّthat ابنَIbn (son of) مَعدانَMaʿdān فِيهin it
عارَضني أنَّ ابنَ مَعدانَ فِيه
Whenever I condemn Fate for what it does,
When I blame Time for its deeds,
I am gainsaid by Ibn Maʿdān’s being in it.
I am countered by the fact that Ibn Maʿdān is in it.
