أتَجفونيdo you shun me? وطَيفُكَand your apparition لَيسَdoes not يَجفوshun
أتَجفوني وطَيفُكَ لَيسَ يَجفو
ولاand not تَصفوyou are sincere وودand the love الطيفِthe apparition يَصفوis pure
ولا تَصفو وود الطيفِ يَصفو
Do you shun me, though your apparition does not?
You spurn me, yet your phantom does not spurn,
Nor are you sincere, though your apparition's love is pure.
Nor fades the love your phantom stirs and sows,
وقَلبيand my heart بعدَafter بَينِكَyour departure نصفُhalf قَلبٍa heart
وقَلبي بعدَ بَينِكَ نصفُ قَلبٍ
وقلبُكَand your heart بعدَهafter it قلبٌa heart ونِصفُand a half
وقلبُكَ بعدَه قلبٌ ونِصفُ
And after your departure, my heart is half a heart;
My heart toward you is but a halved heart;
And after that, your heart is a heart and a half.
Your heart to mine but heart and halved heart knows.
سَكرتُI grew drunk وكانَand was كأسُكَyour cup ذاhaving مِزاجٍan admixture
سَكرتُ وكانَ كأسُكَ ذا مِزاجٍ
فكيفَso how أفيقُI sober up منهاfrom it وهيَwhile it is صِرفُundiluted
فكيفَ أفيقُ منها وهيَ صِرفُ
I grew drunk while your cup was diluted;
I'm drunk, and from your cup inebriation
So how can I sober up from it when it is undiluted?
How shall I sober be, pure wine it flows?
